A Radio Study of the Seyfert galaxy Markarian 6: Implications for Seyfert life-cycles

چکیده
We have carried out an extensive radio study with the Very Large Array on the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Mrk 6 and imaged a spectacular radio structure in the source. The radio emission occurs on three different spatial scales, from ∼7.5 kpc bubbles to ∼1.5 kpc bubbles lying nearly orthogonal to them and a ∼1 kpc radio jet lying orthogonal to the kpc-scale bubble. To explain the complex morphology, we first consider a scenario in which the radio structures are the result of superwinds ejected by a nuclear starburst. However, recent Spitzer observations of Mrk 6 provide an upper limit to the star formation rate (SFR) of ∼ 5.5 M⊙ yr , an estimate much lower than the SFR of ∼ 33 M⊙ yr −1 derived assuming that the bubbles are a result of starburst winds energized by supernovae explosions. Thus,

Jet-gas Interactions in the Seyfert Galaxy Markarian 78
The Seyfert 2 galaxy Markarian 78 offers a rare opportunity to study the interaction of kpc scale radio outflows with the surrounding emission line gas. Using VLA and HST imaging and spectroscopy we identify a number of signatures of the interaction, including jet disruption and deflection. Folding in kinematic features, we identify three regions which may be exhibiting early, intermediate, and...
متن کاملLocalised neutral hydrogen absorption towards the radio jet of Markarian 6
We present ∼ 0. ′′15 (56 pc) resolution MERLIN observations of neutral hydrogen (H i) λ21 cm absorption detected towards the arcsecond-scale radio jet of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 6. Absorption is detected only towards a bright, compact radio feature located, in projection, ∼ 380 pc north of the likely location of the optical nucleus. Based on comparison with an archival HST image, we pr...
متن کاملASCA Observation of an X - Ray - Luminous Active Nucleus in Markarian 231
We have obtained a moderately long (10 second) ASCA observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 231, the most luminous of the local ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) population. In the best-fitting model we do not see the X-ray source directly; the spectrum consists of a scattered power-law component and a reflection component, both of which have been absorbed by a column NH ≈ 3× 10 22 cm...
متن کاملOH megamasers , starburst and AGN activity in Markarian 231
We present MERLIN observations of OH maser and radio continuum emission within a few hundred pc of the core of the Ultra Luminous IR Galaxy Markarian 231. This is the only known OH megamaser galaxy classed as a Seyfert 1. Maser emission is identified with the 1665and 1667-MHz transitions over a velocity extent of 720 km s. Both lines show a similar position-velocity structure including a gradie...
